Nancy Pelosi has called for a boycott of the 2022 Beijing Olympics due to human rights issues

Due to human rights issues, US Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi suggested a diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing at a bipartisan congressional hearing on Tuesday.

Pelosi urged governments around the world not to honour the Chinese government by sending their heads of state to China for the Olympics, arguing that sending heads of state to China as a genocide is taking place while they are in their seats begs the question of what moral authority the heads of state have to speak about human rights anywhere in the world.

The publication of the 2020 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices by the US Department of State prompted Pelosi’s remark. The treatment of Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities by the Chinese government was described as “genocide and crimes against humanity” in the study. “Those who turn a blind eye to crimes against humanity bear responsibility for them,” Pelosi concluded.
